Tirzah - When the ten northern tribes broke away and formed the Kingdom of Israel, they initially chose the ancient Canaanite city of Shechem as their initial capital.
"Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king." (I Kings 12:1, NASB)
A few years later they moved the captial northeast to another Canaanite city, Tirzah. There it remained until Omri, king of Israel, built the city of Samaria.
"In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king over Israel and reigned twelve years; he reigned six years at Tirzah." (I Kings 16:23, NASB)
